The English name of Frog-bit refers to the haunts of this plant, where the blithe reptile is its frequent companion; the Germans too term it Der Froschbiss. In some country places it is called Lesser Water-lily, the form of its kidney-shaped leaves resembling those of that flower. The generic name is from the Greek words for water and to rejoice. Our Common Prog-bit is the only British species of the genus, but Ray describes a species, which had double and odoriferous blossoms, and grew, in his time, plentifully in a ditch in the Isle of Ely. It has been sought for there by modern botanists without success. SEA SPURREY SANDWORT.--Arenaria marina. Class Decandria. Order Pentagynia. Nat. Ord. Cabyofhylle.b. Chickweed Teibe. The name of the genus Arenaria, from Arena, sand, is indicative of the soil on which most of the species are found. The plant figured here is frequent on the sea-coast, sometimes hanging down in tufts from the crevices of the cliffs, at others growing on the sand or marshes of the shore. The species so frequent on gravelly and sandy inland soils, called the Purple Sandwort Arenaria rubra), is much like this, but is generally more slender, and has smaller blossoms. Many botanists think it to be the same kind, varied only by the influences of climate and soil. The little starlike blossoms are to be found from June till August; and when growing on salt marshes in great numbers, they are ornamental to their grassy surfaces, for the stems are there often more upright, and the flowers larger than on the sand. 96 SEA SPURREY SANDWORT.
