Inquires whether art has a kind of history derived from its own internal dynamic, whether that history has drawn or is drawing to an end, what the future of either historical or ahistorical art might be, and the extent to which such a future can be anticipated and prepared for. Eight of the essays examine the Hegelian ideas of philosopher and critic Arthur Danto on the subject, the other seven cast more widely from a variety of perspectives. Invited contributions join presentations at a 1990 symposium in Lahti, Finland. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.
