The Malaysian state of Terengganu has a population of about 25,000 Chinese, some 3.4 percent of the population, whose settlement dates back to at least the 18th century. Tan (anthropology, Chinese U. of Hong Kong) reports on cultural change and identity among this group, who have had close relations with their Malay neighbors over the years.
