The first part systematically covers different aspects of the history of British India beginning with events in the anti-British movements in 1946, including the protests against the trial of the officers and soldiers of the Indian National Army and the famous incident of the Royal Indian NavyMutiny. Chapter Two covers the various political parties, with special attention to the Communist Part of India and the Hindu Mahasabha. The latter is also the subject of documentation research in a separate chapter entitled "Communalism." Chapters Three and Four are braodly concerned with peasantand the industrial working classes, the economic conditions and economic policies in 1946, caste movements, and linguistic regional movements. At the end of chapter Five there are also two small sections addressing the question of women's status and culture.
