The basic approach of this work is to provide a text which includes extracts from statutes, statutory instruments, cases, practice directions, practice notes and other materials. The book covers the criminal process in four stages. Firstly, arrest, detention, the discretion to prosecute and the prosecution process are examined. Remands and bail, mode of trial, summary trials, trials of juveniles, appeals, legal aid and costs are all dealt with in the second stage. Thirdly, committal proceedings, indictments, arraignment and pleas, jury trials and appeals to the Court of Appeal (and further) are explored. The fourth stage of discussion explores areas such as the procedure between conviction and sentence, custodial sentences, community sentences, financial penalties and sentencing of young offenders. The Criminal Justice Acts 1991 and 1993 are fully discussed where relevant, as are sections of the Report of the Royal Commission on Criminal Justice, and the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.
