The need to settle the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is a central precondition to peace in the Middle East. Up until the early 1970s this conflict was almost always referred to as the 'Arab-Israeli' or more simply the 'Middle East' conflict. From 1973 onwards the problem began to be perceived differently. As the Palestinians began to assume their role as central actors in the shaping of their own destiny, an international consensus began to emerge that failure to deal with the core problem of the Palestinians will only lengthen and exacerbate the conflict. The commissioned articles in this book present a study of public opinion on this issue in various Western democratic governments and Israel.
