Since people are one of South Asia's greatest assets, it is felt that a people-centered development strategy can help reverse many of the imbalances and contradictions created by past development policies, particularly those of the 1980s, which was a 'lost' decade for development. Ponna Wignaraja is Coordinator, United Nations University South Asian Perspectives Project. Akmal Hussain is one of Pakistan's most distinguished economists, and a member of Steering Committee, Independent Group for South Asian Cooperation, and Chief Economist, Economic Policy Research Unit. Harsh Sethi is Research Fellow at the Center for the Study of Developing Societies in Delhi, and Ganeshan Wignaraja is Visiting Research Fellow at the MARGA institute, (Sri Lanka: Center for Development Studies). All the co-authors have written numerous papers on alternative development strategies.
