TAPESTRY is a high interest, popular three-volume work of multicultural contributions. It has been compiled over the past three years by students of Lamar High School & the Lamar Press in Arlington, Texas. Begun in the early fall of 1991, the book is a result of planning by the Committee on Cultural Diversity, working to provide a medium through which the student body would give self-expression. A grant from The Community Education Fund of Tarrant County, a subsidiary of THE FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, provided the means for its production. The fund is established for the purpose to promote innovative writing projects in schools in Tarrant County. The books contains exciting non-fiction stories, family tales, essays, poetry, drama, humorous anecdotes, photographs & recipes from every ethnic group in the school. In addition, there are a few contributions from guest writers intended to be teaching artifacts. With only limited exposure, the three volumes have had successful sales with permission from the grantors. The commentary from readers of the books include: "I could not put it down once I started to read it." Some educators have used selected stories to supplement their curriculum. English as a Second Language teachers have said that the stories are of manageable length for their students & therefore provide relevant teaching tools for the classes. What is most important however, is that the books offer the opportunity for hearing voices of different peoples that make up the rich heritage of America. These volumes, mirrors of today's American society, may help promote the understanding needed for cooperation & peaceful, successful, coexistence. TAPESTRY is a valuable addition to every library in schools & homes. To order call Lamar High School, (817) 460-4721.
