This book looks at the diversity and dynamics of Europe's population, from the first period of demographic transition to the second period of change and the challenges faced by 21st century governments as they strive to tackle the impacts of migration and ageing. It considers the changes of the last 60 years and the redrawing of the European map; the readjustments and consequences of upheavals in eastern European countries; the development of the mediterranean demographic fault line; the contrasts and contradictions of changing fertility and mortality patterns; and the emergence of a new political space.
