In particular he has been able to consult, in their originals, the ancient papers of the Calvert family; a body of manuscripts unknown to previous historians, recently discovered in England among the litter and rubbish of an old conservatory, rescued from destruction, and acquired by the Mary land Historical Society. Some of these papers, as throwing new and important light on the events of the time, have been quoted at considerable length.
