This is a brief book for people who dedicate their careers or volunteer their time trying to make a difference in public matter. It does not cull its management and leadership lessons from presidential campaigns, sports dynasties, dramatic corporate mergers, or public projects of the magnitude of the Tennessee Valley Authority or the Manhattan Project. Note that the concepts and skills we will discuss do not apply to these large complex operations; rather, these grand contexts are simply too distant to feel relevant for most of us who work and volunteer in the public sector. This book is geared toward the familiar workaday world of public schools, local volunteer initiatives, and small and medium size nonprofits because these are the contexts in which most of us – practitioners and students – spend most of our time trying to get things done.
