Although not used by Turkish citizens or the inhabitants of the region themselves, the name Lazistan (taken from the name of an Ottoman sub- province) is used for the Black Sea bordering region studied by Beller-Hann (Turkish studies, Martin Luther U., Germany) and Hann (Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Germany). After a brief introduction to the geography and history of the region, the social realities of the inhabitants are examined in separate chapters describing the impact of the Turkish state, the consumption-oriented economic life, the world of political parties and other voluntary organizations, the ideology of patriarchy, the institution of marriage, the impact of Muslim identity, and the characteristics of ethnic differentiation.
