EDWARD IV, Earl Of March. Birth and Reign.--He was the eldest son of Richard, Duke of York, and the lineal descendant of Lionel, the second surviving, but third son of Edward III. He was born at Rouen (1443), crowned at Westminster, and reigned from 1461 to 1483. Marriage.--He espoused Lady Elizabeth Grey, daughter of Sir Richard Woodville, and widow of Sir John Grey, of Groby, in Lincolnshire, who was slain in the second battle of St. Albans. This is the first instance since the conquest of an English king having married a subject. She survived her husband, and on the accession of Henry VII., was confined in a nunnery at Southwark, where she died. Issue.--Edward; Richard; Elizabeth, who married Henry VII.; and other children. Death.--He died of a fever at Westminster, and was interred in the new chapel, Windsor, the foundation of which was laid by himself.
