I was born in the '70s. Raised in the '80s. Had kids in the '90s. And I empty nested in the '00s. Growing up in my childhood home was hard, making babies was easy, and raising great kids was challenging. I met my husband, Greg, in 1991. I was 17 and he was 23. Naturally, we were arrogant, carefree, and madly in love with each other given our young age. Somewhere in those late nights, and definitely before marriage, everything changed when we made a baby. Turns out, contraceptives only work when you use them. We entered parenthood determined to leave behind the traditional, broken family cycles we were raised in. Our definition of those cycles have been called delusional by some and perceived as rejection by others. The 'fuck offs' and 'fuck you's' in those relationships, always the real deal. I started my family in what some call sin. When my life's choices looked irresponsible to others, they were the most defining moments of my damn life. Three kids in and failing as many times as I succeeded, I reinvented those broken cycles and instead created the most tender, raw, and messy experiences of real life. The lessons learned along the way became the insight I used to raise myself and my family. Now, 26 years later, we're young empty nesters and more in love than the day we met.
