Earlier studies have shown traditional Thai-Malay relations to be a product of dubious claims on the part of Siam over her weaker neighbors to the south. Here Suwannathat-Pian, using an enormous range of both Thai and Malay sources, argues that the tributary system within its indigenous andhistorical context provides a more satisfactory account of the development and nature of Thai-Malay relations.
