When life's situations do not go as planned, God wants us to learn to trust in Him. The problem is that when we get saved, we are usually filled with bitterness from past unresolved hurts. God wants to cleanse us from all the bitterness of our past. God knows that we will have a difficult time walking with God if we have unresolved hurts from the past.Just as God uses this situation to reveal to His people their bitterness, God wants to use situations in our lives to reveal the bitterness of our past. The people of God had undergone four hundred years of terrible bondage in Egypt. They were slaves in a foreign land and were treated with contempt. God knew they were filled with contempt. They were slaves longer than our nation has been in existence. God knew they were filled with the bitterness of the past four hundred years. It went back to many generations of families that were filled with bitterness and anger. God wanted to take these people who were filled with the bitterness of past generations and make them into people who would trust Him completely. It was a tall task. The first step is to reveal to us bitterness. God uses situations that do not go as we planned. In this example God uses bitter water to force the people of God to confront their bitterness. What do they do? They complain and murmur against Moses. I Corinthians 10:10 tells us, "....nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer." In fact, the people murmured a lot against the Lord and against Moses. In Deuteronomy 1:27 we read, "....and you complained in your tents...."
