It was a quiet life, working as a gate agent for a small regional airline in Phoenix - until one day Chris Rose woke up to discover that he had died. Now a cog in the bureaucratic afterlife machine of the Intermission, he works for the city’s guardians as a gate agent for the dead. All around him, souls await their fate: a trip to eternity in paradise, or annihilation among the discarded chunks of burning refuse below the city. There seems to be no hope of escape, until Chris discovers a group of scientists designing an interdimensional portal that could lead him somewhere else. Maybe even home.
