The last days of Napoleon were spent in exile on the desolate island of St. Helena were he was attended by a tiny retinue and constantly at war with the island's British governor. He managed to find a few moments of solace especially with the friendship of the young daughter of a local planter. The cause of his death at the age of fifty-one remains the subject of much speculation. In his play, David Kaye strives to present Napoleon as a human being as well as an historical figure as he explores beneath the usual image of this most complex and controversial man.
