In July of 1741 a group of Scots-Irish immigrants loft Northern Ireland bound for Philadelphia. After a stormy seventeen week crossing their disabled ship came ashore near Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy. Abandoned by a treacherous captain, a group of ten women and an infant survived the winter and were unlimately rescued by Passamaquoddy Indians. The Grand Design has been presented as a stage play. In this book Julia Lane shares her research, including complete transcriptions of historical documents, which underlies the dramatic production.
