That s because in Head over Heels: One Collector s Love Affair with Shoes, visitors are just steps away from more than 600 exquisite and rare examples of the most fashionable high-heeled footwear from the late 1800 s to the present. The exhibit is drawn from a much larger collection of shoes belonging to 68-year old Yakima resident David Childs, who remembers being fascinated with shoes as a child. I grew up in the Midwest and my first collection of shoes were paper shoes I d cut out of the Montgomery Ward catalog, says Childs. As an adult, working in shoe stores and learning more about fashion and fit, Childs began visiting vintage and antique stores and stitching together his collection. He knew exactly what he was after. I don t do flats, boots, practical shoes, matching handbags or sets, he says, This is a cultural history of the 20th century as told through pristine, displayable, high-heeled shoes.
