Pass the exam CHAPTER ONE OBTAINING A NEW CREDENTIAL CREDENTIAL OVERVIEW The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) issues three types of credentials, as outlined below Identification Cards These are available to any qualified Indiana resident. Identification cards are issued at no cost to individuals who are or will be 18 years of age on or before the next General or Municipal Election. Learner’s Permits This category includes a driver learner’s permit (herein referred to as learner’s permit), motorcycle learner’s permit, and a commercial learner’s permit. Driver’s Licenses This category includes a driver’s license and commercial driver’s license (CDL). All credentials issued to Indiana residents who are under 21 years of age have a vertical format and display the dates the cardholder turns 18 and 21 years of age. A star marker appears in the upper right-hand corner to indicate that a credential is Real ID-compliant and may be used as identification for federal purposes.
