This major work describes the history and archaeology of Amman, the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and reports the Jordanian-British excavations directed by the late Mrs. C.M. Bennett at the Citadel. Northedge analyzes the changes brought about by Islam to this eastern Roman city, and treats the fine Roman and early Islamic architecture, particularly the orientalizing Umayyad palace. Chapters by other specialists discuss the history of Amman from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine period, the Temple of Hercules and the fortifications. The volume is published under the auspices of the British Institute at Amman for Archaeology and History.
