Francis Jaques's The Queen of Corsica, written in 1642, does not appear to have been acted although its detailed scene directions indicate the author's keen interest in the theatrical (and occasionally macabre) possibilities of the late Caroline dramas. Through close analysis of the British Library manuscript, Janzen shows that the play was written in the popular mode, influenced greatly by contemporary dramatists and by the political crisis immediately before the Civil War.
