This project identified environmentally responsible features and techniques that could be incorporated into the design of a single detached dwelling in a cost-effective manner with no adverse effect on the saleability of the house in the mainstream urban market; produced detailed work drawings; and validated the cost of the resultant sustainable house. Performance criteria was developed through personal expertise, a literature review, and consultation and interviews with industry representatives. The proposed house was compared to a standard house for quantity of lumber used, electricity and water consumption, heating/cooling requirements, generation of pollutants, and overall energy impact.
