Drawing on a wide range of contemporary material, the author considers why the 1848 revolutions occurred and why they were so widespread. He investigates the economic and social circumstances of the countries involved and examines how far the apparently general European upheaval had its roots in local grievances. He also analyzes the longer term effects of the revolutions on the course of European history -- in particular the development of nation states.
