Based on a wide range of international comparisons covering advanced economies as well as emerging and developing countries, the report sheds new light on the fundamental way in which employment patterns have altered in recent years. It documents the significant rise in new forms of work (including temporary, casual and part-time employment, own-account work and informal arrangements) and the decline in standard employment relationship, characterized by open-ended, full-time jobs. The report also seeks to understand the impacts of these emerging forms of work on productivity and income inequalities. In light of the evidence presented, it examines the critical areas of policy intervention that must adapt to this new setting in order to support job creation and mitigate the risk of growing insecurity at work. The role of social protection, employment regulations and global supply chains is examined in detail.--Résumé de l'éditeur.
