
Education reform in middle schools has too often mirrored elementary or secondary reform in curricula or organization, without understanding why the middle school exists. The authors contend that surface fixes in middle schools are not as relevant as deep, structural change that implements the ideals, philosophy, and beliefs of the middle school concept.
