The authors re-examine the Bank's early history and the deepening crisis of the late 1970s and early 1980s, explore intellectual developments at the Bank and the crucial change of government in 1984, and explain how the challenges of the 1980s prompted the Bank to take the opportunity to refashion its systems and design a new institutional policy framework that targeted inflation.
