Out of a total population of 16 million, 10 million people in the Netherlands take part in sport. Half of them do this through one of the 27,000 sports clubs distributed throughout the Netherlands that make use of the country's approximately 7,000 sports halls. The Dutch spend more than $268 per year per head of the population on sports-related items. In Sport in the Netherlands, the main sports research institutes in the Netherlands provide a statistical overview of the Dutch sports landscape. Koen Breedveld studied leisure studies and is project leader of the report on sport project of the Social and Cultural Planning Office in the Netherlands. Annet Tiessen-Raaphorst studied human movement science and is a team member on the same project.
