To Dr. Ward I owe a lifelong debt, which I have never forgotten. With equal gratitude I would recite another name, more widely famous, and very pleasant to me, -the name of Sir William Smith, who, from the beginning of our acquaintance in the Quarterly (which dates back to my considerations on Heinrich Heine reproduced here) down to the last moment in which he held the pen, allowed me every privilege, and gave me continual encouragement.
