Theravada Buddhism is the dominant religion among the Sinhalese of Sri Lanka. Using Lankatilaka Vihara, one of the most important temples close to the old capital of Kandy as an example, this book paints a vivid picture of the ritual, land tenure, and administration of contemporary Buddhism on the basis of field studies from 1964-65. This is a revised edition of author Hans-Dieter Evers's original book entitled Monks, Priests and Peasants: Buddhism and Social Structure in Central Ceylon.
