This unit goes beyond the technical aspects of software development and explores how the software development process can be made predictable in terms of costs, timescale and quality of product. It aims to give an understanding of the principles underlying the management of software development, showing how this breaks down into the management of resources, quality and configuration.Consideration is given to how resources are managed (by means of project organisation, estimation of work content and cost, scheduling of work and progress control) and how software quality can be assured (by marshalling the product quality measures in Unit 11 and by drawing upon external standards such as ISO 9000-3 and CMMI).This unit also shows how the software product's configuration can be managed.
