
Excerpt from An Essay on the Authenticity of the Book of Daniel Bayle and Voltaire, when the passions it engen dered found their pretext in the intolerance of opposition. That stage has died out it is too foreign to the modern mind. But it is much to be wished that the stage of abuse which has replaced and succeeded it should also perish. I have had oc casion to allude to this habit once or twice in the course of this Essay. If experience proves that the Bible can be discussed reverently and philosophically in the same breath, there should be but scanty exception to so good a rule. Reason would then be found at least respecting where it did not always justify the veneration paid by reli gions feeling to the Sacred Volume.
