Viagra was initially created to help treat angina (a form of chest pain). It contains sildenafil, its active ingredient, which was intended to treat chest pain. However, the medication could not produce the desired effects they had hoped for during clinical trials. Interestingly, there was another effect, a side effect it produced - one which caused stronger erection in subjects. This necessitated further research which discovered that the active ingredient Sildenafil, was responsible for stronger erection in about 80 percent of men who received the medication.
