"This two-day meeting at beautiful Chateau du Lac, Genval, Belgium was well attended by more than one hundred delegates from continental Europe, the United Kingdom, North and South Ameirca. Joint replacement is a multidisciplinary enterprise and it was the crucial to the success of the meeting that orthopedic surgeons, engineers, scientists and manufacturers participated in exchanging ideas and fostering collaborative investigation. The symposium accomplished its original goal of reviewing the current scientific knowledge and clinical experience of upper extremity joint arthroplasty and outline the future directions of investigation. In order to benefit more workers in the field joint replacement, and more specifically, the upper extremity joints, this publication presents 38 chapters covering scientific investigations and design rationales for implants of various anatomical joints including the finger, wrist, elbow and shoulder. The design concepts presented here may serve as a solid foundation for further developments and improvements in upper extremity joint replacement."--Page v
