Not since 1966 has there been a comprehensive pictorial history of the region which comprised the eastern portion of Thomas Lord Fairfax's "Northern Neck Proprietary" - the land and waters between the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers from their juncture with Chesapeake Bay west to the Blue Ridge Mountains. If any place in America can be said to stand squarely in the path of history, it is the land between the Rappahannock and the Potomac up to the Blue Ridge.
