The central thesis of this book is that the seemingly secure societies of the so-called North are increasingly vulnerable to events in the lesser secure and hence underdeveloped regions of the globe, in a manner that conventional international relations and development theory have failed to account. The book begins with an introduction on the changing foundations of the world system. The world system is a conceptual framework described in the first chapter of the book and subsequently used to understand the present global crises. The rest of the book discusses five types of insecurity: environmental, economic, social, political, and cultural, in a global context. It notes the sources and manifestations of these insecurities, as well as their culture, structures, processes, and effects. The book concludes with four basic observations relating to the global crisis and the need for a new analysis from a geocentric point of view.
