The benefits of hospital provision of day surgery facilities to both patients and the NHS are highlighted in this report. It reviews the extent of day surgery currently carried out in the NHS, considers some of the obstacles to its further development and suggests how these might be overcome. The implications for hospitals in planning, organizing and managing day surgical units are explored and cost savings, value for money and other cost effective measures are identified.
