In the beginning, there was the Hero, and the Hero was with man, and the Hero was man. This is the way it was in the beginning. Heroes—both real and fictional—are very important to our culture, if only because they achieve a level of success that is simply not accessible to the vast majority of us. Driven by a higher calling, and often with no thought of reward or concern for their own safety, they accomplish great feats and rescue people the rest of us simply can’t or won’t rescue. They are the people that we aspire to be, but know we are not. Superheroes are creatures of science, magic, and (sometimes) alien physiology, yet that isn’t what makes them heroes. It is something from inside them, a burning desire to not only be the best that they can be, but to use their powers and abilities to help others. They are—on a very visceral level—more than human. There is a reason that we worship heroes, and that is because we love and adore them, even though as much as we admire and emulate them, we will never be them. This anthology is 20 stories from 15 authors that explore the nature of superheroes.
