This first novel by Mary Carlson tells dual, alternating stories. One story begins with Cornish immigrants who come to southwestern Wisconsin to work in the lead mines during the mid-19th Century. The other story begins during the bombing of England during World War II. The author skillfully weaves these plots together by the book's end.
