This report presents the results of empirical analyses and numerical modelling of the runout characteristics of rapid flow slides of waste mine rock. The first stage of the work consisted of data collection to provide information on the factors affecting mine dump failures, the failure mechanisms, and the nature of the debris runouts. Other stages of the work consisted of the development of an empirical method for predicting runouts from an analysis of the developed database, the development of an analytical model from an adaptation of the DAN computer program for the dynamic analysis of flowing materials, and a proposal for a method of runout assessment. Appendices include maps and diagrams of case-history flow slides, a derivation of the flow model, and graphs of the numerical modelling results.
