These papers present an insight into and highlights of several recent design/construction standardization activities in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, and Israel. Emphasis is placed on strict adherence to codes and standards to improve site safety and attempts to reduce construction failures and accidents at minimal or no extra cost. Discussion focuses on new performance-type OSHA safety standards; construction loads and other safety measures specified by US, UK, and Japanese standards; provisions for excavations in the new Quebec construction safety code; site safety concerns of the new Israeli Formwork for Concrete standard; and improving erection safety and reducing erection costs.
