In 1999, the Health Council of The Netherlands recommended an investigation into the occurrence and effects of estrogenic compounds in surface waters and its potential effects on aquatic organisms. As a result, the Dutch government initiated a broad investigation into the occurrence of these types of contaminants and their effects on fish in the Netherlands. The project entitled “Landelijk Onderzoek oEstrogene Stoffen” (LOES) took place from 1999 to 2002 and is described in this book, whose contributors include expert groups in Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union. Estrogens and Xenoestrogens in the Aquatic Environment guides the reader through the data and experiences in the studies and provides practical frameworks and methods for field monitoring and effect assessment, as well as relevant regulatory approaches.
