Medical educators are becoming increasingly aware of the important role that residents play in teaching both students and patients. This important program -- a comprehensive manual and accompanying videotape -- effectively increases residents' capacity to teach and learn in clinical settings. It emphasizes practical skills and does not require special equipment, high technology, or special settings. Best utilized as part of the regular schedule of resident conferences throughout the year, this program encourages the practice of teaching skills in the everyday flow of interactions among patients, students, and residents in both in-patient and out-patient clinical settings. The authors base their program on such resources as research studies; perceptions of students, attending physicians, and residents; expert opinions; and adaptations of social science theory and research. In so doing, they provide the information residents require to develop skills as teachers including: * background informational summaries from medical education and the social sciences, * explanations of practical teaching strategies, * examples and case studies, * discussion questions and exercises, * simulations, * references for further reading, and * videotape vignettes.
