This book, originally published by John Wiley and Sons in 1973, surveys theories about alliance formation, performance, duration, disintegration, and effects. Empirical studies analyze the sources of alliance performance during the 19th and 20th centuries, the effects of conflict and detente on NATO and WTO, and the impact of bloc structure on intra-alliance conflict, with special emphasis on France and China. Author Biography: Ole R. Holsti is G. V. Allen Professor of International Affairs at Duke University. P. Terrence Hoppman is Professor of Political Science at the University of Minnesota. John D. Sullivan is Professor of Political Studies at Pitzer College in Claremont, California.
