Looking at the operations of deconstruction, de-composition, re-denomination and re-connotation performed on objects by avantgarde movements, this issue investigates the "historical" contribution of art to the design of 20th century products. We will explore the various phases of artists' design activity (also in relation to technology and production), an activity which has too often been considered the exclusive domain of designers. Whereas art forms a multifaceted theoretical background of design opening up new perspectives on the notions of series, materials, production methods or object consumption, the world of design is a mere reference point for the artist's creation and production of objects.
