The National Conference on Native Participation in MineralDevelopment had two main objectives. First, to undertake apractical examination of alternative approaches to nativeparticipation in mineral development. The assumption behind thisobjective was that mineral exploration and development activitieswill continue in Canada and that these activities willincreasingly be occurring in areas inhabited by native people. It was thought appropriate to explore how natives might benefitfrom these activities. The second objedctive was to establish acommon background of understanding among participants on suchmatters as the various attitudes and practices of native peoplestowards mineral activities, and the practices of companies andgovernments regarding mineral development.
