This bulletin outlines recent trends in a single area of provincial government policy related to non-profit organizations: social services. It begins with an overview of the importance of non-profit organizations & charities in social service work, and reviews provincial restructuring initiatives intended to make the social service system more efficient. Trends are then summarized with regard to the models used for provision of public welfare, the requirements for welfare & workfare programs, the regionalization of social service delivery, the approaches used in restructuring social services, the implementation of single-entry integrated delivery, enhancement of accountability, community engagement, and transfer of service delivery to Aboriginal communities. Finally, key trends in non-profit/state relations and policies are summarized.
