The screenplay of Ozu's The Only Son made in 1936 is translated here into English for the first time. The Only Son is supposed to be his first talkie. It depicts the character of an ideal mother in the traditional Japanese society. The present work contains the full Japanese texts of the two screenplays transliterated into the Roman alphabet. These translations are based on the texts of the screenplays in Ozu Yasujiro Sakuhin-shu III (A Collection of Ozu Yasujiro's Works- III published in 1984 by Rippu Shobo in Tokyo).
