This study, investigating the role of semantic and discourse factors in the interpretation of Chinese reflexives, presents a picture of Mandarin morphological reflexives, including ziji and its compound forms and benren self and ben/zi-shen self and their compound forms. Pan (linguistics, U. of Texas- Austen) argues that locally and non-locally bound reflexives belong to different grammatical systems and thus should be subject to different conditions. He also argues for the separation of contrastive and non-contrastive reflexives and proposes to separate the two different uses of non-contrastive ziji: one constrained by locality and compatibility conditions, the other regulated by self-ascription.
